Family Engagement

Communities In Schools of Appalachian Highlands

Empowering Families to Overcome Educational Obstacles

At Communities In Schools of Appalachian Highlands, we see potential in every student and family and we are committed to helping them see it too.  We empower all families, regardless of race, gender, zip code, or socio-economic background, to realize their greatest potential.  We walk by their side, in their communities, to navigate barriers that stand between them and their students’ success in school and in life.

Decades of research shows that genuine, reciprocal relationships are the foundation on which educators and families can overcome educational obstacles. Adapting to the remote learning environment introduced new challenges and a magnified need for strong connection families, often requiring time, training and skills beyond the capacity of teachers.  Family engagement takes different forms based on individual community and school needs.

Some of our best practice strategies include:

  • Family check-ins
  • Home visits with families in need of support
  • Information sharing
  • Navigating systems of support
  • Family events and programming
  • Digital and online engagement
  • Culturally-responsive support
  • Connection to and collaboration with community resources
  • Basic needs support and referrals
